![]() They are looking for items to meet an existing need.Įxperience has shown that this European style statue with its gold and brown accents would not be in-demand. Further, very rarely can people see the POTENTIAL in an item. My years of experience in retail and in selling vintage/antique items tells me – this statue in its current condition – it would be less desirable to customers. My goal is to find this statue a new home – a home where it will be loved, cherished and well cared for. There are people who are heaving a heavy sigh after reading that sentence because they are not happy that the statue was changed. So, yes, you can tell from that sentence alone – that I altered the statue. The photo above shows the “before” condition of the statue. I could see that the statue also had potential. The statue was made in the late 1960s and from my perspective – it needed some help. The piece had sentimental value but it didn’t fit in with their current decor and style. A friend recently passed along a plaster statue to me that they could not find a use for or room for. Such is the situation with my most recent project. So, by being true to what I believe and in what I share with you, it can leave me wondering if I am off track.Īm I too far off base from what everyone else is drawn to? Are the things I share worthwhile? Do the things I share even “count”? Should I be talking about the latest Keurig machine? Or sharing the candles I bought from Walmart? If you are a blogger or if you have any footprint on social media – then you may understand my thoughts. Similarly, I am sharing ideas on reusing something you already have in a new way. It’s just that, here in my little world, I am constantly promoting those things that are vintage or handmade. Not that there is anything wrong with that. The newest rugs, the latest gadgets, the greatest finds at Target. So many bloggers are promoting the newest, the latest, the greatest. Sometimes blogging can bring waves of self doubt. In late 1931, in the midst of the Great Depression, Savage returned to Harlem, where she concentrated on teaching and advocacy.” She established the Savage Studio of Arts & Crafts in 1932 and taught at the Harlem Community Arts Center and the Harlem Artists Guild, inspiring many future African American Artists. Tanner, Nancy Prophet, and Hale Woodruff. She arrived there in the autumn of 1929 and connected with fellow African American expatriates like Henry O. The breakthrough sculpture garnered the attention of patrons and at last earned her a fellowship through the Julius Rosenwald Foundation to study in Paris. The critical and commercial success of Gamin catapulted Savage’s reputation far beyond Harlem art circles. While the subject is presumed to be her nephew, Ellis Ford, Gamin was conceived as a type rather than a portrait, representing one of the city’s countless street urchins. Here, Savage captures an arrested moment, a sense of true immediacy the child’s glance feels natural and uncontrived. The representation of the solemn, sensitive youth expressed the inherent dignity of an African American identity that many black artists sought to promote. Her first “Gamin” sculpture was created in 1929 and was “a critical work not only to Savage’s career, but also as an embodiment of the Harlem Renaissance’s mission. Her skill in creating portrait busts of African Americans earned her praise, but she was denied admission to a women’s summer art program in France because of her race - an injustice that provoked national headlines. One of fourteen children born to a rural Florida preacher, she moved to New York in 1921 with less than $5 to her name to pursue the study of sculpture at the Cooper Union. ![]() When asked, do not enable automatic backup.Grab an iDevice and turn on iCloud Photos. With that, here is the actual process of moving from Google Photos to iCloud Photos: Moving from Google Photos to iCloud Photos Unfortunately, it doesn’t support HEIC/HEIF, so my point still stands - don’t use Google Takeout. Update: Apparently, there already is a Python script that merges the metadata for you. When I tried this method, my photo library got completely messed up - some of the photos surfaced to the top because of the incorrect date set in the metadata, and a lot of duplicate entries were created because of the HEIC/HEIF bug. So if you’re the poor soul who didn’t know any of these gotchas and used Google Takeout to import your photos and videos into iCloud, you’re in for a very nasty surprise. However, if your photo is in a HEIC/HEIF format, then Photos will create two separate entries and not merge the photos and videos back into a “live photo.” In short, if your photos are in JPG/PNG format and your “live photos” video is in MP4, then it will merge cleanly back into a “live photo” once you import the two files back into the Photos app on your Mac. But why does Google do this metadata-stripping in the first place? What about people that can’t write up scripts when they export their files? This is horrible!Īnother catch with this method is that it won’t preserve some “live photos” - although this is probably more of an Apple bug than a Google bug. Sure, I could probably make a script to “merge” the metadata back into the media files. For other photos and videos, the metadata is mangled, and the date of the metadata is set to the archival date. json file outlining the duplicate metadata. And frustratingly, some photos and videos do in fact preserve metadata - while still having a separate. json file that sits next to your original file with the same file name. ![]() Rather, they’ll “split” the metadata into a separate. Unfortunately, Google Takeout is a steaming pile of garbage, in that it actually discards all of the media metadata when exporting your archive. My first attempt at moving photos/videos from Google Photos to iCloud Photos involved Google Takeout to first export the photos. Unfortunately, going the other way around is a difficult process, which is really, really ironic. Once done, uninstall Google Photos and delete your photos/videos from iCloud Photos if you wish.Turn on Google Photos backup and wait until all the photos/videos are backed up to the cloud. If you don’t do this, photos/videos that you upload to Google Photos will be the “optimized” version, which means it will look like crap. When asked, select to download all photos/videos back to your device in original quality. This is really easy if you still have your iDevice around. On top of that, your web activity is a mystery for other third parties along your connection (basically, anyone who can eavesdrop within your network, like your router owner). A VPN routes your traffic through an encrypted tunnel that won’t give your ISP any useful information about your browsing activity - the latter remains under wraps. Your web activity from ISPs and other third partiesĪlthough your ISP can see how much data you’re transferring and that it goes to a VPN server, it can’t decipher it. So, it’s plain as day (since by hiding your IP, a VPN masks your location as well) that apps and websites will see the location of the remote VPN server you’ve connected to instead of your real one. This, in turn, allows apps and websites to serve you localized content. An IP address is allocated in a number of ways, but the thing to remember here is that it relates directly to your physical location and ISP. Your location has to do a lot with your IP address - basically, your IP address contains some of your location information, which is usually enough to identify which country and city you’re in (it doesn’t provide your specific GPS coordinates, though). Your location from apps and websites you visit Long story short - when you turn on a VPN, apps and websites you visit don’t see your device’s public IP address but a VPN server’s one, which can’t be used to identify you. This way, you don’t get an IP assigned by your ISP when connecting to the internet but an anonymous IP, meaning that third parties can’t track, store, or misuse your activity. With all that’s happening today, I can’t help but wonder if we’ll see the resurgence of the atomic age visual trend as a reflection of the times. The Atomic Age design style is a perfect little capsule of the paradox between fear and optimism, and how society used art to tame the anxieties of its people. However, we should also recognize that we’ve made some giant leaps for humankind, with the Falcon 9 launch being the latest example. COVID-19 has thrusted the world into paranoia, and nuclear anxiety is still prevalent with the rising tensions between North Korea and the United States gracing the headlines. We still live in a time of uncertainty, but anxieties take the form of new unknowns. Looking back at the origins of the Atomic Age design era, it’s interesting to note how much of society has changed, and how much has not. Others argue that the shapes harken to a simpler time, when nature was ruled by the forms of living organisms such as plants and amoebas. Some say that the sleek, organic shapes of its designs were inspired by the media portrayal of nuclear exposure, rendering human beings into mutant forms. Taking influence from themes of atomic science, common characteristics include abstract shapes and bright colors. Hence, motifs of the atomic particles flooded the designs of middle-class households, from wallpaper to furniture, and what was depicted was a unique vision of the future. Some saw beyond the potential of the atom as a nuclear weapon, and saw its role as a new source of energy. CHARACTERISTICSīut within the political unrest of the 50s was a glimmer of hope. ![]() ![]() Schools demonstrated duck-and-cover drills in case of atomic bomb attack, fallout shelters were being built, media portrayal of nuclear attacks influenced the public conciousness and out came a design style that reflected the zeitgeist. With nowhere to run, Cold War anxieties permeated into every aspect of life. While the countries flaunted their firepower, citizens had no choice but to embrace the races on the sidelines, with fears of rising tensions leading to an all-out nuclear war. The 1950s were home to major technological advancement: the arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War extended from nuclear weapons to the space race, with both parties eager to prove their superiority as innovators at the frontiers of technology.
